News & events Remarkable year for Harry leads to theatre visit to see his festive favourite A Prior's Court young person has been empowered to visit the theatre to see his favourite festive show - a trip only possible after years of dedicated support. Harry was one of four young people, alongside peers Zac, Sammy and Joe, who travelled to London to see the Christmas classic The Snowman live on stage this week. Everyone had a great time taking in the show. But for Harry, this was a particularly notable achievement. Through a combination of a move to live by himself on our site late in 2023, a consistent regular team of staff working with him, and clearer visual information in his environments, Harry has made huge strides this past year. This is particularly evident in his communication, self-regulation, well-being and self-confidence. All of this has empowered him to live a happier life, accessing a wider range of activities, including out in the community. This latest trip featured a theatre with plenty of sensory elements, lots of excitement and environmental unpredictability – all potential challenges for Harry. But he had a joyous time. He watched intently throughout, narrated the story and joined in where possible. The show was in Central London and he was even settled enough to be able to explore the Christmas Lights display there. Prior's Court Care Manager Clare, who manages the residential home Harry lives in, said: A year ago, this would have been a dream trip for Harry to go on, but probably not achievable at that point. He has come such a long way that this week, the dream became a reality. Some of Harry's words while watching the production were 'it's snowing, it's like a snow globe' and he said to Team Manager Becky “Becky, I love it.” This is what we strive to achieve at Prior’s Court – we understand that the little things are actually the big things for an autistic young person with complex needs, and we celebrate them as major milestones. A daily life skill gained or an anxiety conquered today is a stepping stone towards tomorrow’s work placement, a shared special occasion with family, or a London theatre visit to see your festive favourite. Well done to Harry and thank you, as ever, to the staff members who made this amazing achievement happen – not just on the day of the trip but all of the support given to Harry over the past years to get to this point.
